What is CIPA e-prescribing?

An interactive computer-supported prescription processing system, known as e-prescribing, has been developed by CIPA. E-prescribing offers numerous benefits, including the potential for a reduction in medication errors through more legible prescriptions and the ability to check for drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy interactions; a reduced administrative burden that results in provider time-savings and improved efficiency; it will reduce chart pulls and simplify staff workflow by allowing completion of refill authorizations in seconds, not hours; improved patient satisfaction; and improved formulary compliance and cost savings.

E-prescribing offers the ability to provide physicians with immediate access to the formulary and generic status of prescribed agents, allowing them to discuss medication costs and alternative choices with patients at the point of care. It allows physicians to carry their entire patient database with them to check patient medications and allergies from anywhere.
